On the first date of Christmas my true love said to me, ‘let’s stay at home on the settee’. It’s getting close to the most merry time of the year, yet many of us aren’t feeling so ‘merry and bright’. What are you doing for your partner - or shall we say, WITH your partner this Christmas? If you’re a bit stuck for ideas, we have a few ideas to get you into the festive spirit with The 12 dates of Christmas.
- Create your own Christmas carol or rap
Bring out those inner lyrical geniuses to create a Christmas rap or carol that will get everyone fa-la-la-la-la-ing. Bonus points if you perform it to family and friends.
- Decorate your Christmas tree together with Christmas music blasting in the background
Put up the tree and decorate together - make it a fun task instead of one that’s dreaded. Agree on a themed look for the tree, whether the decorations are all white, or you only use snowflak
- Make snowmen out of ice cream
All you’ll need is some french vanilla, plenty of lolly decorations and a bit of creativity. This is a bonus family friendly date. Get together, make a mess and have plenty of fun!
- Visit Franklin Road and take pictures outside your favourite house
A classic Aucklander Christmas celebration is Franklin Road. All the houses on the road get geared up and deck the front yard with lights and all the Santa paraphernalia.
- The Christmas movie marathon with hot chocolate
Elf, Home Alone, Love Actually, need we say more? You can watch all your Christmas guilty pleasures with hot chocolate in hand. Snuggle up with your partner and feel festive.
- Take a dorky Christmas photo in ugly sweaters to send to all your friends and family
Although the New Zealand summer weather isn’t too allowing of jumpers, we think this is the perfect excuse to get a bit dorky. Take a whole lot of pictures and spam your family and friends.
- Build gingerbread houses
Every good Christmas season diet includes gingerbread, so make the most of it with a gingerbread house! It will take a bit of practice and fiddly decoration - but will be worth it when it’s all completed.
- Go for a romantic picnic on the beach!
A picnic on the beach is a Kiwi favourite. Not sure what to pack? Our Date Nite has a special picnic date package which includes delivery of your own picnic hamper to any location you’d like.
- Role play dress up in Christmas themed outfits
Dressing up is a guaranteed way to feel festive. Santa, Mrs Claus, Reindeer, Elves - you have many options to choose from. The only question is: will you be naughty or nice this year?
- The Window shopping date
It is Christmas at the end of the day - Christmas means gifts and shopping. Take your significant other around the shops and show them ‘subtly’ what you’d like.
- Ice skating
Feel like you’re in a winter wonderland. Wear your beanie and scarf, and glide on the ice!
- Dinner and dessert under fairy lights
Fancy something a little bit fancy? Ortolana and Milse have paired up to give you a hip, progressive date night served under the fairy lights. It’s a date night winner.
These are just some of our quirky ways to make Christmas a bit more exciting, these are just a few of them. How do you normally get ready for Christmas? We’d love to hear from you.
